I've had this conversation more times than I can count.
Someone calls me from Seattle, California, or across the country. They've done their research online. They've seen the photos. They think they want to be here. But they're not sure — it's a big move, and they want to know if Gig Harbor is actually what it looks like.
It is. And then some.
Here's what I tell them.
It's 30 minutes from everything, and feels a world away
Gig Harbor sits just across the Narrows from Tacoma, with Seattle less than an hour away on a good day. You can be at an international airport, a major medical center, or a world-class restaurant in under an hour. But when you come home, you come home to water views, tall trees, and a pace of life that doesn't feel like any of those places.
That combination is rare. Most places that feel this way are actually remote. Gig Harbor isn't. It's connected — you're just not surrounded by the noise of it.
The outdoor access is real
I mountain bike, trail run, hike, snowboard, and spend as much time on the water as I can. I chose to live here for a reason.
Within minutes of most Gig Harbor neighborhoods, you have access to trails, marinas, waterfront parks, and some of the most beautiful scenery in the Pacific Northwest. In winter, you're a couple of hours from the mountain. In summer, the Sound is your backyard.
For buyers who are relocating from denser, faster places, this is often the thing that tips the decision. They didn't know they could have a commutable life that also looked like this.
The community is the part nobody expects
Buyers who move here expecting a pretty waterfront town are usually surprised by something they didn't anticipate: how much they like their neighbors.
Gig Harbor has a genuine small-town feel that's increasingly rare at this price point. People know each other. There's a real downtown with local restaurants and shops that have been here for years. There are farmers markets and community events and the kind of place where you run into people you know.
For families, it's an exceptional place to raise kids. For empty nesters, it offers the social fabric that many suburban communities have lost.
The buyers who come here tend to stay
I've worked with a lot of relocation clients over the years. The ones who move to Gig Harbor almost never leave. They upgrade within the market — move to the water, upsize for family, right-size when the kids are gone — but they stay in Gig Harbor.
That says something.
Thinking about making the move?
If you're considering Gig Harbor and want to understand the market, the neighborhoods, and whether it's the right fit for your life — I'd love to talk. I've lived here for over 20 years, and I know this place well.
